The Circular City (Stage 5 - 2016)
Home-Working community on the Old Kent Road, London
The Site is located on the Old Kent Road and it is part of the regeneration area of the Southwark Council. The City Council plans to provide facilities for commercial, business and residential purposes (20,000 new houses by 2043).
On the other hand there has been evidence that the Home-working culture will emerge rapidly in the future due to the high-evolved technology which supports fast and efficient communication.
As a result there will be a greater need for specific architectural typologies which support the emerging culture of Home-working.

The scheme identifies the social subject of Home-working culture and proposes an architectural solution in the regeneration area of the Old Kent Road to support the needs of the growing community of Homeworkers.

Despite the percentage of Homeworkers, the13.9 % (4.2 millions) of the total workforce of the UK, there is not an architectural solution to support their needs and lifestyle, thus many of them struggle to maintain a routine or separate work from life since both are squeezed in the same space. Additionally they might experience social isolation or health problems associated with lack of physical exercise, due to the long hours they spent inside their homes.

The Site is the former land of the London Gasworks factory, which was operating until the 70s. The only trace of its history is the freestanding Gasometer. The Gasometer due to its dominant size is a landmark of that area. Thus it’s repurposing was an aim for the scheme, which is designed around the specific needs of the Home-working lifestyle. To achieve that the way of everyday life has become an experience. The separation of the work and home units motivates the occupants to walk everyday to work through social/ green areas with great views. This offers an everyday social interaction to the Home-workers. Additionally leisure public spaces such as the Urban beach, the Lunch break, the sunset balcony and the sunbathing balcony, offer that much needed change of scenery.
Finally the proposed architectural solution creates a viable and innovative alternative use for gas holder structures all around the UK.
